BMW owners are more likely than other motorists to be caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the 50 largest U.S. cities, according to a new LendingTree study. There are 3.09 DUI (Driving Under the Influence) offences per 1,000 drivers of this brand. In second place is Ram (3.00), followed by Acura (2.69), Audi (2.42) and Volvo (2.42).

Here's What We Know

Interestingly, there are four premium brands in the top five at once. But at the bottom of the list were Mercury (0.86), Land Rover and Lincoln (1.16 each). Tesla ranked 16th with 1.9 DUIs per 1,000 drivers.

Rankings by car brand (DUIs per 1,000 drivers):

  1. BMW - 3.09
  2. Ram - 3.00
  3. Acura - 2.69
  4. Audi - 2.42
  5. Volvo - 2.42

Among age groups, Gen Z (19-27 years old) leads the way in violations with 2.62 DUIs per 1,000 drivers. Millennials are next (2.4). The rate declines with age, with the Silent Generation (79-95 years old) at just 0.21.

According to LendingTree analyst Rob Bhatt, "As people get older, they become more cautious, and it is hoped that Gen Z will also change behaviour over time."

Leading the way among cities in terms of DUIs was Omaha, Nebraska with 4.48 per 1,000 drivers, more than double the average (1.9). Six cities in California and New York also made it into the top 10, despite having advanced public transport by US standards.

Chicago has the lowest DUI rate among major cities at 0.45 per 1,000 drivers. It is followed by Tulsa, Oklahoma at 0.65 and Miami, Florida at 0.66.
