Missouri authorities launch investigation against AI companies for alleged bias against Trump
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, a Republican, has initiated a formal investigation against AI developers, suspecting them of political bias against Donald Trump. ChatGPT, Meta AI, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini have come under the crosshairs. The reason is alleged "discrimination" against Trump and favouring other politicians in the chatbots' responses.
Here's What We Know
The essence of the claims - in "censorship" and "manipulation", allegedly AI displays politicians not as the state prosecutor's office would like. In practice, it looks like an attempt to interfere with the development of language models by requiring the AI to be "neutral" - in the sense of how a particular politician interprets it. Bailey argues that AI developers are violating consumer protection laws by misleading users with "supposed impartiality".
The initiative has already drawn criticism from human rights organisations and the AI community as it directly addresses issues of freedom of expression, algorithm design and could potentially lead to political pressure on technology developers.
