Some interesting information has surfaced online about Apple's plans to update unboxed Macs.

Here's What We Know

Portal 9to5Mac reported that in the files of macOS 26 beta 3 found mention of a system for updating Macs without opening the box.

Most likely, the technology will be similar to the one used to update iOS in iPhones from spring 2024. To do this, employees at US Apple Store locations place smartphone boxes into a special device running Mac mini and the Presto software switches the iPhone on contactlessly, updates iOS and switches the device off. Most likely, NFC is used for iPhone updates, but the Mac doesn't support this technology, so it's logical to assume that the update will take place via Bluetooth and only with a MacBook, since a stationary Mac needs a constant power source.
