Switch 2 can block accounts for used cartridges from the original Switch - and it's not a bug, it's a "feature"

A Reddit user with the nickname dmanthey has reported an unexpected ban on the new Nintendo Switch 2 when trying to run physical cartridges from the original Switch, bought off-hand from Facebook Marketplace.

Here's What We Know

In the case described on Reddit, the owner of the device received an account lockout after downloading patches for several game cards with games for the original Switch. When installing a used cartridge - the system identified a licence mismatch and perceived this as a possible rule violation. While contacting support, the user provided proof of purchase and was unlocked.

Nintendo has yet to make an official comment, but users suspect that Switch 2 may have a new licence verification system for physical copies. The mechanism may be against piracy or grey trade, but indirectly affects the fair secondary market.

The Switch 2 could be the first Nintendo device to truly restrict the sale and resale of physical games. If it's confirmed that any cartridge activation is tied to an account, we could see the beginning of a "DRM revolution" in the world of console gaming. In the meantime, we advise caution with secondary market purchases. Mario isn't the same anymore.
