Square Enix is actively engaged in re-releasing its classic games and has already released several pixelated remasters of the main parts of Dragon Quest. According to new information, the company will not only continue this trend, but also increase the scale of the planned work.

Here's What We Know

Portal MP1st received information from internal documents of the publisher, according to which the remake of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, which was released 25 years ago on the first PlayStation, is in development.

MP1st emphasises that the Japanese developers have clearly labelled the project as a "remake" rather than a "remaster", indicating a larger reworking of the game that includes not only graphics improvements, but also changes to gameplay and core mechanics, and possibly story extensions.

As an example, MP1st portal cites Final Fantasy VII Remake, which is significantly different from the 1997 game.

The insiders' information was confirmed by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier:

I think it's safe to say that Square Enix wants to remake as many DQ games as possible for modern platforms. That's not to say that all or any of them will be massive and ambitious revisions like FFVIIR.

The remake of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is expected to be released in late 2026/early 2027 on all current platforms.
