Rumour: Samsung may drop the Plus model in the Galaxy S26 series

Samsung, like Apple, may abandon the "Plus"-version: according to leaks, the Galaxy S26 series will feature the thin and light Edge instead of the Plus. Industry experts note that Samsung's lineup already looks oversaturated: up to 11 models in 2025, and the S25 Edge with S25 Plus are examples of confusion between gadgets close in parameters.

Here's What We Know

According to the latest leaks from the GSMA IMEI database, there is no Galaxy S26 Plus model - the Galaxy S26 Edge (SM-S947) is expected instead, along with the base S26 (SM-S942) and the top-of-the-line Ultra (SM-S948). This restructuring is reminiscent of Apple's strategy: with the release of the iPhone 17 lineup, the Plus disappears, to be replaced by the ultra-thin Air.

Both the S25 Plus and S25 Edge have a 6.7-inch display, Snapdragon 8, 50MP camera - so there's no point in duplication. The Edge is thinner (5.8mm for the S25 Edge vs. about 7mm for the S25+) lighter and made of titanium, but lacks a telephoto lens.

It is also worth noting the decline in buyer interest in the S25 Plus, for 4 months to sell "plus" became noticeably worse:

  • Galaxy S25 - 4.86 million units
  • Galaxy S25 Plus - 3.17 million
  • Galaxy S25 Ultra - 8.39 million

As long as Samsung remains officially silent, the chance for the Plus model to return theoretically remains. But historically, the company has always entered all models into its IMEI database ahead of time. If the Plus never appears in the coming weeks, it's likely to signal its cancellation.

There are several reasons for this move: firstly, simplification of the lineup is a long overdue decision. Fewer models - less confusion and pain of choice for the buyer. Secondly, the base Galaxy S26 itself seems to have been pumped up a bit: the new number SM-S942 (instead of SM-S941, as it was before) hints at a bigger screen, a larger battery or a camera with a twist - all the things that used to distinguish the Plus.

What's next

The new models are expected to be released in early 2026, probably in January-February, following Samsung's tradition. Before that, the company will test the Edge's acceptability - especially when compared to Apple's anticipated iPhone 17 Air.

Samsung is clearly determined to simplify the lineup and emphasise its focus on slim, stylish smartphones - and at the same time to keep up with Apple if it does introduce the iPhone 17 Air. We'll find out in early 2026.
