In early July, it became known that Microsoft cancelled the development of the game codenamed Blackbird - an ambitious MMO from the authors of The Elder Scrolls Online, which was handled by ZeniMax Online Studios since 2018.

This decision seemed strange, since significant resources were spent on Blackbird, but now the possible reason for such a radical step has become known.

Here's What We Know

Authoritative journalist Windows Central Jez Corden during the podcast The Xbox Two reported that Microsoft and Bethesda abandoned Blackbird to focus their efforts and resources on Fallout.

Moreover, we are talking not only about the fifth numbered part, which according to Corden has already been given the "green light", but also several other games in the series, which correlates with the recent rumour of large-scale plans of American developers to develop the famous post-apocalyptic franchise.

Corden explained that the development of Blackbird would require even more investment, and after release the game would have to compete with the giants of the genre, such as World of Warcraft, so it was decided to bet on a popular and well-known franchise, which does not need additional promotion.

Most likely, new parts of Fallout will have to wait for a long time, for example, the release of Fallout 5 is not expected until 2030.
