Google Pixel 6a owners have begun to experience the effects of a new update that significantly affects battery life. The update, which was released on 8 July 2025, limits charging and reduces battery life on phones with batteries that have completed more than 400 charge cycles.

Here's What We Know

Google explains that this is a precautionary measure following isolated cases of Pixel 6a overheating and catching fire. During the update, charging is limited to 80% - the device simply stops charging if the battery has already reached this level. A message appears on the battery information page with a recommendation to replace the battery.

Users are actively sharing their experiences on Google and Reddit forums. Some complain that the phone holds a charge for only a few hours, while others notice that the device charges very slowly or does not charge at all beyond 80%.

The update caused fewer problems than the Pixel 4a.

For Pixel 6a users, Google is offering a free battery replacement or compensation in the form of a credit towards the purchase of a new device in the Google Store.
