Kia has unveiled the Carens Clavis EV, its first electric car made entirely in India
Kia has unveiled an all-electric version of the Carens Clavis minivan, the first time it has been built entirely in India. The electric car was created with an eye on emerging markets and was a logical continuation of the petrol version, which already looked like an EV thanks to its futuristic design.
Here's What We Know
Like the internal combustion engine version, the Carens Clavis EV retains the sharp body lines and proportions of the compact car, but with a number of differences: there's a charging port at the front, the centre air intake has been removed, the wheels have a more aerodynamic shape and the panel in place of the traditional grille is backlit.
Kia calls the Carens Clavis EV "an adventure-ready recreational vehicle with SUV features". The interior seats seven people and retains a three-row layout with a body length of 4,550mm. The instrument panel is realised in the form of a continuous digital screen with a width of 26.6 inches. Thanks to the absence of a classic transmission, the centre console has been given a 'hovering' design with additional storage space.
Front seat ventilation, a Bose audio system with eight speakers, a panoramic sunroof, atmospheric lighting and up to 20 driver assistance systems (including Level 2 Autopilot) are available depending on equipment. The second row features "Boss Mode" seats with electric folding for easy access to the third row.
Technically, the Carens Clavis EV is based on the same platform as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The electric motor and battery are also borrowed from the Creta Electric.
Specifications:
- Base version: 42 kW∙h battery, 133 hp (99 kW), 404 kilometres of range on the MIDC cycle.
- Long Range: 51.4 kWh battery, 169 hp (126 kW), range up to 490 kilometres.
- Both versions feature liquid-cooled battery, IP67 dust and water protection for electronic components, support two-way charging (V2L) and fast charging up to 100 kW.
Prices in India are equivalent to around $21,000-$28,600. In comparison, the petrol and diesel versions of the Carens Clavis cost $13,400-$25,100.
