Adidas has unveiled the updated Climacool Laced: the first 3D lace-up trainers
Adidas has released an updated version of its 3D printed Climacool Laced trainers - now with lacing, a black tongue and a silhouette suitable for a wide audience.
Here's What We Know
The Climacool trainers came out in 2024 as a laceless model with a breathable lattice structure printed in a single 24-hour shift using polymers. The Laced version, which goes on sale from 15 July for $160 (+$20 to the previous version), adds black laces and tongue: all done separately, using traditional methods.
The lattice structure remains the same - breathable, quick-drying and flexible. But the lacing opens up the possibility of an adjustable fit, especially for those whose foot size doesn't fit within the "universal" parameters of the original.
The pair is available online on the Adidas Confirmed platform and in select shops.
What this means for the industry
- 3D manufacturing is becoming a mainstream format. Adidas has shown that shoes can be created digitally and still combine modern technology with familiar designs.
- Moving towards hybrid methods. The combination of 3D printed soles and lacing is a signal: pure additive printing remains a niche solution, and the mass market requires adaptation.
- More of an evolution than a revolution. Adidas continues to experiment, and Nike is coming alongside: similar 3D models are appearing from rival brands.
- The danger of overestimating technology. Although the solution is aesthetic and technological, critics have already noted the stiffness, weight (≈416 g) and not the best suitability for intense sport - more like a street trainer than a running model.
