Sony has announced the launch of a free replacement programme for its flagship Xperia 1 VII smartphones, which were found to have a manufacturing fault and their sales, after numerous complaints, were halted.

Here's What We Know

The Japanese company conducted an internal investigation and found that the malfunctions on some Xperia 1 VIIs were caused by PCB defects that occurred during the manufacturing process. This led to unstable power supply and malfunctions in the device, which costs €1500.

Sony apologises for the inconvenience and promises that the production process has already been corrected to eliminate similar cases in the future. The manufacturer knows the serial numbers of all defective smartphones and is ready to replace them free of charge.

To do this, since 21 July, users can check the IMEI of their smartphone on a special Sony portal. If the device falls into the list of defective, it can be exchanged for a new copy.

The company recommends backing up the data before sending the device for replacement.
