Tesla is preparing to launch a longer version of the Model Y crossover in China. The new version with the index L will have three rows of seats, six seats, increased wheelbase and more powerful powertrain. The premiere is expected in autumn 2025.

Here's What We Know

As stated in the application for certification submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China (MIIT), the dimensions of the novelty are 4976×1920×1668 mm with a wheelbase of 3040 mm. It is 179 mm longer and 150 mm longer on the base than the standard five-seater Model Y. Weight is 2088kg versus 1992kg for the regular version. The electric crossover is built on the same platform and uses LG's NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) batteries.

The extended Model Y will be equipped with a twin-motor all-wheel drive setup: the electric motor on the front axle develops 142 kW, while the rear axle develops 198 kW. The combined output reaches 340 kW (456 hp), which is slightly more than the standard Model Y Long Range (331 kW / 450 hp). Top speed is limited at 201 km/h.

The Model Y remains Tesla's key model in China. In 2024, the crossover sold 480,309 copies, becoming the best-selling car of the American brand in the local market. It accounted for nearly 75 per cent of all Tesla sales in the country. However, after the January restyling (Juniper version), demand began to decline: in the first half of 2025, 171,491 cars were sold - 17.5% less than in the first half of 2024.

With the release of the Model Y L, the company expects to regain consumer interest. Competitors include the Onvo L90, BYD Tang L, Huawei Aito M9 and Li Auto L8. According to Chinese sources, the price of the novelty is expected to be around 300 thousand yuan (about $41,800).
