OpenAI launches ChatGPT Agent: A new generation of AI that can answer your mail

OpenAI has taken a huge step forward with the introduction of ChatGPT Agent, a new feature for Pro, Plus and Team users that allows AI to not only think, but also do things for you. From now on, ChatGPT can use its own virtual computer to schedule meetings, search the web, create presentations, and even order products online - all without the need for user intervention at every step.

AI working as an assistant

Now you can ask it queries like: "look at my calendar and prepare a summary of meetings with clients based on the latest news", "plan and buy ingredients for a Japanese breakfast for four", or "analyse three competitors and create a presentation". ChatGPT is able to navigate websites independently, select the results you need, securely request authorisation, run code, perform analysis, and even generate editable presentations and summary tables.

This capability is based on a unified agent system that combines the three previous achievements:

  • Operator's ability to interact with websites,
  • the analytical depth of Deep Research,
  • and the intelligent flexibility and conversational skills of ChatGPT.

When performing tasks, ChatGPT seamlessly moves from logical reasoning to action based on your instructions. Unlike the previous Operator and Deep Research tools, the new agent combines their capabilities and adds even more:

  • An interactive visual browser and a text browser for working with websites.
  • API and command line access for more complex tasks.
  • The ability to integrate with third-party services (Gmail, GitHub) via ChatGPT Connectors.
  • Performing complex workflows: from competitor analysis to the preparation of financial models.

Control and security

OpenAI emphasises that users are always in the driver's seat. ChatGPT requests permission for important actions and allows you to stop or adjust tasks in real time. Additional safeguards include protection against prompt-injection attacks, data access restrictions, and the ability to instantly delete all browser sessions.

Why is it important?

According to the test results, ChatGPT Agent outperforms humans in a number of tasks involving data analysis, financial modelling, and working with complex spreadsheets. It has also significantly improved its accuracy in searching for information on the Internet, becoming the most efficient agent among competitors.

ChatGPT Agent availability

ChatGPT Agent is being rolled out today to Pro, Plus, and Team users. Pro users will get access by the end of the day. Plus and Team - over the next few days. Enterprise and Education will be available in the coming weeks. The Deep Research feature is now integrated into ChatGPT Agent, but for those who want to use the original version, it is available in the drop-down menu as a "Deep Research" option. Limits: Pro users get 400 messages per month, other paid plans get 40 messages with the option to purchase additional volume at flexible rates.

Now ChatGPT not only writes, but also acts on your behalf. The next step will probably be to entrust it with automatic purchases.
