Enthusiast engineer's iPhone case switches Lightning port to USB-C

Swiss engineer Ken Pillonel, known for his DIY projects with connectors, has introduced a new accessory - a case that adds a USB-C port to an iPhone with Lightning. This is not a modification of the phone, but a full-fledged device: inside the case is a small board that converts Lightning to USB-C. Thus, you can charge your iPhone with a regular USB-C cable, as well as transfer data.

The case is a prefabricated plastic panel consisting of two parts(installation guide). The case snaps securely around the phone, swapping Lightning for USB-C via an integrated board and connector. All without opening the case, soldering, or special skills.

What you can do with this case:

  • Charge your device from USB-C with 9 V fast charging support regardless of cable orientation - delivers the same current at any plug position
  • Transfer data to a computer and use Apple CarPlay
  • Use wireless charging, as the platform is MagSafe compatible.

There's a nuance: some Lightning-connector features may still require the case to be removed - this is due to Apple's restrictions on proprietary adapters.

There's also a SIM card slot inside the case - a handy feature for travellers. The case supports about 20 iPhone models with Lightning - from iPhone X to iPhone 14 - and costs $45-55 at the official Obsoless shop. Colours are dark grey for now, with other options promised later.

Pillonel says he wants to extend the life of older iPhones and reduce electronic waste - changing devices frequently for the sake of a new connector seems pointless to him.
