Insider: new Ghost Recon instalment is being built on Unreal Engine 5 - Ubisoft has dropped its own Anvil and Snowdrop
Authoritative insider Tom Henderson continues to reveal interesting details of the new part of the series of tactical shooters Ghost Recon, the development of which was recently confirmed by the head of Ubisoft Yves Guillemot.
Here's What We Know
We already know that the next Ghost Recon will return to the franchise's roots and will be a dystopian first-person shooter. Now, in his weekly Insider Gaming podcast, Henderson revealed that Ubisoft is using the popular Unreal Engine 5 technology rather than its own Anvil and Snowdrop engines when developing the game.
The insider recalled that the early parts of Ghost Recon were created on Unreal Engine, and later developers used their own infrastructure, which simplified some stages of production, but affected the atmosphere and perception of the game.
It should be noted that for a large company it is much easier to work with Unreal Engine, because there is no lack of specialists in this profile and the engine is suitable for almost any game, while Anvil and Snowdrop are sharpened for action games in the open world and Ghost Recon can really turn out much better on Unreal Engine, especially since other developers, such as CD Projekt and BioWare, are resorting to a similar solution, abandoning their own technologies.
When We Can Expect It
Several of Henderson's sources at Ubisoft previously reported that the company has made good progress in the development of the Ghost Recon sequel and plans to move the game into the internal alpha testing stage as early as autumn 2025.
