Valve founder Gabe Newell buys Oceanco shipyard, one of the leading superyacht manufacturers
Gabe Newell, the founder of Valve (Steam, Half-Life, Counter-Strike, etc.), has acquired the Dutch company Oceanco, which specialises in the construction of luxury superyachts. Oceanco is known for building giant yachts for billionaires, including the one they built for Jeff Bezos.
Details.
The deal became possible after Oceanco got into financial difficulties: the previous owner, Mohammed Al Barwani, faced sanctions and a loss of customers. Newell bought the company through his investment firm Hulks Investments.
The new phase of development is intended to make Oceanco more innovative, with a greater emphasis on environmental technologies and design solutions.
Newell loves the sea and admires the people who have dedicated their lives to it. He has his own fleet of yachts, including the Oceanco-built Draak. This year, the company is to launch his new $400 million vessel.
As for his plans for the company, Newell promises not to interfere with the company's technological processes: "Oceanco has vision and integrity, and a culture that actually works. Gabe doesn’t want to fix it, he wants to fuel it".
