BMW continues to reveal details about the new iX3 crossover - the first production model on the Neue Klasse platform. One of the features of the novelty is a high proportion of recycled materials - 33% of iX3 components are made of recycled materials.

Here's What We Know

BMW calls this approach to car production "design for circularity". Materials in the design of the car were selected at the design stage with regard to the possibility of reuse.

Thus, a part of upholstery of seats is made of recycled PET-plastic (polyethylene terephthalate), and under the bonnet elements - electric motor cover and compartment under the bonnet - on 30 per cent consist of plastic of marine origin. This is former fishing nets, ropes and other debris collected in the ocean.

80% of the aluminium in the steering knuckles and suspension arms is recycled. The wheels are also 70% recycled aluminium.

BMW emphasises that all this eco-friendly work reduces, rather than increases, the carbon footprint. The high-voltage battery uses 50 per cent recycled cobalt, lithium and nickel. The energy to produce the anodes, cathodes and the cells themselves comes from renewable sources.

As a result, CO₂ emissions along the entire supply chain are reduced by 35 per cent. According to BMW's calculations, this means that after just one year of operation or after 21,500 kilometres of driving, the new iX3 starts to deliver an "environmental benefit" compared to a "conventional" car.

The official premiere of the BMW iX3 will take place in September at the Munich Motor Show. In addition to "green" materials promise a power reserve of up to 644 kilometres and a high-tech interior with an emphasis on artificial intelligence. Series production will start before the end of 2025.
