Subaru's latest filings with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office hint that the Japanese brand is preparing several new models. Subaru has filed applications to register three names: ACX, VPX and ZPX.

Here's What We Know

All three applications refer to "automobiles and their structural parts, including electric vehicles," which clearly indicates the development of new EV platforms or models. That said, the designations have no historical ties to the brand's existing vehicles and Subaru has not previously used them.

Interestingly, all three have filed separate applications for STI versions, which is unusual for the brand's current position: there are no full-fledged STI models on the U.S. market today. Yes, the WRX tS and BRZ tS models are equipped with STI parts, but these are not the true sporty modifications that fans of the brand are used to.

Perhaps Subaru wants to return the sporty component, which the company has partially lost in recent years. In favour of this speaks and the old application for the mark "STe", presumably - the designation of the electric range with an emphasis on dynamics.

Of additional interest is that the ZPX application also includes the Wilderness sub-mark - a line of off-road versions of Subaru. We can assume that future models will be offered in two versions: sporty (STI/STe) and off-road (Wilderness).

Of course, as with other registered names, this may just be insurance for the future rather than confirmation of a soon-to-be-released model. For example, last year Subaru registered a dozen names - from Everpass to Trailseeker - but in the end only Uncharted went into production.

So we can only wonder whether ACX, VPX and ZPX will turn out to be the names of future Subaru electric cars or just remain in the patent archives.
