Trump postpones tariff hike on Chinese goods for 90 days again
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order extending the current tariffs on Chinese goods for another 90 days, postponing the planned increase in rates. This decision postpones a possible sharp increase in duties, while maintaining the existing rates at approximately 30% - 10% basic and 20% additional.
The extension of the relaxed customs policy regime provides additional time for negotiations between the US and China. The Industry Policy Summit suggests that this is a step to prepare for a potential Trump-Xi summit that could take place in autumn.
Financial markets reacted positively to the extension of the "tariff truce". In particular, stocks in Asia rose: The Nikkei 225 rose by 2.6%, the Shanghai Composite added +0.3%, while the Hang Seng slightly declined. Thus, the actual result is a temporary reduction in tension between the two economic giants, but a fog of uncertainty remains over the long-term solution to the crisis.
By the way, the 90-day postponement of TikTok's ban in the US expires in a month. Despite claims that the postponement was made due to the active negotiation process for the sale of the company, there has been no change in ownership and the cart is still there.
