Tesla has posted a Vehicle Operator, Autopilot job opening in the Flushing area, offering full-time employment, a benefits package, and an hourly wage of $25.25 to $30.60 depending on the level of the position. Work shifts are day, evening or night shifts.

Here's What We Know

Operators will spend between five and eight hours a day behind the wheel of Robotaxi. They will directly drive the vehicles in case of "Autopilot" problems, as well as collect data from cameras and microphones to train and test the systems. Duties include starting and stopping recording equipment, minor debugging of software and techniques, analysing data, preparing reports and checking the car is in good working order before each shift. Despite the high level of automation, constant concentration is required.

CNBC notes that Tesla has not yet obtained a permit to test autonomous cars in New York State. Even if it does, regulations require a safety driver in the cabin, which may explain the hiring. The company is already using a similar scheme in San Francisco, where Robotaxi services are positioned as a service of calling a car with a driver rather than a full-fledged drone.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously revealed plans to provide access to Robotaxi in half of the US by as early as 2026.
