Volkswagen design chief Andreas Mindt has posted the first official image of the second-generation T-Roc crossover on Instagram. The photo shows that the novelty received a more impetuous silhouette with a sloping roof.

Here's What We Know

The premiere will take place in the coming weeks, and the public debut is expected in September at the Munich Motor Show, where Volkswagen will also unveil the ID.2X compact electric crossover.

The big news of the next-generation T-Roc will be a hybrid unit of a new type for Volkswagen. It will work on a scheme similar to Toyota hybrids, allowing to move only on a petrol engine, only on electric traction or in combination. The Golf and Tiguan will get the same system in the future.

According to VW head Thomas Schäfer, the company decided to introduce this technology because some regions of the world are accelerating their transition to hybrids (HEVs). South America in particular needs such powertrains, and that's where the T-Roc is produced, as well as in China. In addition, interest in hybrids has also increased in the US amid slowing sales of battery electric vehicles (EVs).

Schäfer said that after the T-Roc, Volkswagen will look at which other models make sense to use a hybrid system. However, a complete switch to HEVs is not yet planned. The updated model range will include both plug-in hybrids and self-driving ones.
