GPD has revealed the sales launch date for its unusual Win 5 portable console, which impresses with its performance, but also raises many questions due to an unusual design solution - the creators of the gadget have abandoned the built-in battery. Instead, it uses an external battery with a capacity of 80Wh, which is connected via a DC port.

Here's What We Know

GPD Win 5 will be the world's first portable console based on the latest AMD Ryzen AI Max 385 and 395 processors from the Strix Halo line. The device will be available in two configurations: with 8 cores and 32 GPU units or with 16 cores and 40 Radeon 8060S graphics units, comparable in performance to the desktop RTX 4060.

The official website has revealed that GPD Win 5 will be released on the 17th of October. Earlier, the approximate price was also called - over $1500 for the top configuration, but so far the manufacturer does not specify this important nuance.

The console is equipped with a 7″ LTPS-display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, refresh rate up to 120 Hz and brightness of 500 nits. Despite the powerful stuffing, the console's body remains compact: 267×112×24 mm excluding the battery.

According to preliminary tests, Win 5 shows impressive performance: over 200 frames per second in Black Myth: Wukong, making it one of the most powerful handheld gaming systems on the market. However, due to the idea of no battery, the GPD Win 5 can hardly be called a portable gadget in the usual sense, as its power consumption is 75W and users need to carry a bulky battery and connect it with a cable to the console.
