Tesla brings back paddle shifters in China after customer complaints

The updated sedan Tesla Model 3 Highland appeared in 2023 without indicator paddle switches - they were replaced by buttons on the steering wheel. Not all buyers liked this innovation and now Tesla decided to return the usual switches. At least in China.

Here's What We Know

On the Chinese site Tesla in the configurator levers are already listed in the standard equipment. Moreover, from September, the company will offer a special kit called "Model 3 Steering Wheel Turn Signal Lever Modification" for 2,499 yuan (about $349) for those who want to switch from buttons to switches. Installation will be done at Tesla service centres.

Tesla has always had a penchant for minimalist design. Even since the Model S debuted in 2012, when almost all functions moved to the centre screen. But as time went on, Tesla went even further: in 2021, the Model S and Model X lost their paddle shifters, and the classic steering wheel was replaced by a controversial "steering wheel". As a result, owners began to put parts from the then-current version of the Model 3 on their own.

After the restyling of the "three" without levers, the story was repeated, and third-party solutions appeared on the market. At the same time, the updated Model Y Juniper retained the switches - it is these more compact elements, apparently, and will be used in the Chinese version of the Model 3.

According to local media, the official modification is still only available for Model 3 Highland released after 7 February 2025, but Tesla is working to expand compatibility. Whether the option will appear in the US market is not yet known.
