The White House has created a TikTok account
On 17 September, another 90-day extension of the ban on TikTok in the US expires, but to leave no doubt about the seriousness of the US threats, the White House has set up an official account there. The account has already posted the first short video of Trump saying: "I am your voice", with a "America we are BACK! What’s up TikTok?" in the caption.
Context.
It's not that Trump's love for TikTok is a secret - he actively campaigned there, and the ban on the service imposed by the Biden administration has been repeatedly postponed. The cynicism is striking - Intel's CEO has to leave because of his investments in Chinese companies, and Trump himself supports a Chinese platform that actively collects users' personal information. American laws have also proved ineffective - Trump does not cancel the previous decision approved by the Senate, he simply postpones its entry into force indefinitely(once or twice).
The spokeswoman calls it "a new level of communication that no administration has ever used before." And perhaps this is the greatest tragedy of our time - complex political processes are discussed in the format of short viral videos. And the worst part is that a commercial company, especially a Chinese one, owns the algorithms. Changing the search results can seriously change the public mood in the country, as TikTok is used mainly by young people, a segment of society that is able to actively gather for protests and other active actions. We have already seen how TikTok influenced the elections in Romania, where the pro-Russian candidate who almost won almost did not promote his narrative anywhere but on TikTok.
