Samsung is expanding its public beta testing programme for the One UI 8 firmware based on Android 16 and users of nine more smartphone models of the Korean manufacturer will be able to join it as early as September.

Here's What We Know

In August, the company released test firmware for a number of models including the Galaxy S24, Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6.

In September, the following devices will receive the beta version of One UI 8:

  • Galaxy S23 / S23+ / S23 Ultra
  • Galaxy Z Fold 5 / Z Flip 5
  • Galaxy A55 5G / A54 5G / A36 5G / A35 5G

Please note that participation in the programme is only available for users from South Korea, USA, UK and India, but Samsung is constantly expanding the geography of testing, so we recommend that you regularly check for the relevant banner in the Samsung Members app.

Flashback

One UI 8 doesn't bring radical changes like One UI 7, but it does include many useful innovations:

  • Multitasking has been improved: Quick Share got a full-screen mode, Split Screen is more flexible, Samsung Dex allows you to change screen resolution and orientation.
  • Personalisation: live wallpapers change depending on the time of day, new routines - morning briefing, umbrella reminder and others.
  • App updates: Gallery automatically sorts screenshots, My Files filters files by download source, Weather and Reminder have been redesigned, and Calendar is now integrated with reminders and allows you to drag and drop tasks.
  • Privacy and accessibility: Secure Folder supports a separate fingerprint and can be completely hidden, and new zoom and control features have been added.
  • Other improvements: Camera lets you customise gestures, Bluetooth lets you connect devices via QR code, Samsung Health compares sports achievements with friends, and alarms can now be grouped and managed from the home screen.
