Cyberpunk is coming to life again. Amazon has finally set a release date for Blade Runner 2099, the sequel to the iconic Blade Runner story. According to Deadline, it will premiere on Prime Video in 2026.

The project remained in the shadows for a long time: it was first talked about back in 2022, but after the first rumours there was silence. Now the series is already in post-production, which means that the actual release is not far off.

Here's What We Know

The plot is kept secret, but the title hints: the events will unfold some 50 years after "Blade Runner 2049". Ridley Scott, the director of the original 1982 film, is involved. His role in the project is likely a producer's role, but the fact that he's involved gives fans reason to hope for an atmosphere close to canon.

The cast has already been confirmed, with Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh set to play one of the key roles. She will be joined by Hunter Schafer, Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey and Daniel Rigby.

Why it matters

"Blade Runner" has always been more than sci-fi: it's a story about man and machine, memory and identity. Each new project in the franchise is a chance to look into the future through eyes that question where the line between the living and the artificial is drawn.

Now the big question: will Amazon manage to keep the spirit of the original, or will viewers get another "visual attraction" without philosophical depth? The answer is in 2026.
