Google Translator challenges Duolingo: with Gemini, users will be able to learn languages and get real-time translation
Google has unveiled two new tools in the Translate app designed to make international communication easier and language learning more accessible. Both features - Live Translate and 'Language Practice' - are powered by the Gemini artificial intelligence model and are already available in a number of countries.
Live Translate: conversation without borders
Live Translate allows users to have a dialogue in different languages in real time. The translation is displayed on the screen and voiced, allowing the conversation to flow naturally. More than 70 languages are supported at launch, including Ukrainian, Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Hindi and Spanish.
According to Google, the technology recognises pauses, accents and intonation, making translation particularly accurate even in noisy environments. The novelty is already available in the US, India and Mexico, with geographical expansion expected in the coming months.
Personalised learning: AI as a tutor
The second feature, 'Language Practice', offers interactive learning scenarios tailored to the user's level. The system generates listening, pronunciation and vocabulary exercises and gives real-time feedback.
In the first phase, the feature is available for English-speaking users learning Spanish and French, as well as native Spanish, French and Portuguese speakers learning English.
Language Practice with Google is reminiscent of the popular Duolingo app, which allows you to start learning a language from the basics and gradually progress to a more advanced level in an easy to play way
Both features are designed using the Gemini model, which provides highly accurate translation and contextualisation. Google notes that this is part of a broader strategy to integrate AI into everyday services.
