Sony is preparing a Nintendo Switch 2 competitor: insider reveals impressive specs of Canis handheld console

Reputable technoblogger and insider Moore's Law is Dead has updated his own information about Sony's new handheld console, which is being developed under the working name Canis. The previous insider he shared in early August, but now has more accurate information.

Here's What We Know

According to Moore's Law is Dead, conceptually Canis has a lot in common with Nintendo Switch 2: it too will have a docking station, when connected to which the performance of the central processing unit and graphics processor (CPU and GPU) will increase, which will allow you to run games in increased resolution and at higher FPS.

According to the clarified data, the Canis handheld console will get the following specifications:

  • CPU with four Zen 6c cores and two Zen 6LP cores (for OC tasks);
  • 4 MB of third-level cache memory for the 6c cores;
  • TSMC 3nm process chip;LPDDR5X-8533 RAM;
  • 192-bit memory controller with support for up to 48GB of RAM;
  • AMD RDNA 5 architecture GPU with 16 compute units and clock speeds from 1.2 GHz to 1.65 GHz;
  • backwards compatibility with PS4 and PS5 games, but not PS3;
  • M.2 storage slot;
  • microSD card slot;
  • touchscreen, haptic feedback, microphones.

Moore's Law is Dead reckons that Sony's new console will have 24-32GB of RAM, and that performance when docked will be even better than the base PS5.

The insider suggests that the handheld console will go on sale in late 2027.
