The Opel Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid has travelled more than 1,200 km on a single tank of gas
Opel has decided to find out how far a C-Class station wagon with 48-volt hybrid technology can travel on a single tank of fuel, and has achieved a result comparable to diesel cars. According to internal tests, the Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid is able to cover more than 1,200 kilometres without refuelling in real driving conditions.
Here's What We Know
The Opel Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid is powered by a 107 kW (145 hp) powertrain and has a 52-litre petrol tank. Opel test drivers set off on a journey of around 106 kilometres, which led from Rüsselsheim via Darmstadt to Worms and back to Opel's headquarters on the left bank of the Rhine. The Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid covered this route 11 times over two days without intermediate refuelling.
The manufacturer claims that the route included a wide variety of road types. The test drivers drove both on motorways, country roads and small rural roads. They reached a top speed of 138 km/h, drove through villages at low speeds and had to stand in traffic jams during morning and afternoon rush hours as well as on construction sites - often in fuel-intensive mode with frequent stops. The test was thus conducted under everyday conditions that every driver faces. The average air temperature during the test was 23 degrees Celsius.
The Opel Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid used was equipped with numerous optional extras, such as an electrically operated sliding glass sunroof, which added weight and therefore fuel consumption.
Final results of the two-day endurance test:
- The Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid covered a total of more than 1,200 kilometres without refuelling.
- Average fuel consumption was 4.3 litres per 100 kilometres, 0.7 litres per 100 kilometres below the official WLTP figures.
- Thanks to the 15.6 kW (21 hp) electric motor and 48-volt battery pack, the electric mileage share was just over 28 per cent. In terms of kilometres, the Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid covered around 345 kilometres during the test on electric power alone.
- The average speed for all motorway sections and congestion stops was 61 km/h.
However, the editors of the VOX auto mobil channel on YouTube wanted to know more and put the Opel Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid to the test themselves - but not on a fixed "track", but on a typical long holiday trip. Thus, the two drivers travelled from Munich to Sylt. In total, the editors drove 1,154 kilometres across Germany without refuelling. Even with two people on board (instead of one, as in Opel's internal test drive), air conditioning on and an average speed of 78 km/h, they managed to achieve a consumption of 4.8 litres per 100 kilometres.
