GM is limiting production of the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ
General Motors will temporarily cut production of its most expensive and heavy-duty electric vehicles, the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ. From September 2 (Labour Day in the US) to October 6, the first and second assembly shifts of these models will be stopped at the Factory Zero plant in Detroit-Humtramck, reports the Detroit Free Press.
Here's What We Know
The company explained that this is part of "adjusting production to meet market dynamics." According to a GM spokesperson, production schedules are regularly reviewed to maintain a balance between production and demand.
The shift reductions will affect 160 employees, with about 200 more already on involuntary layoff since April - when the company announced temporary layoffs due to slowing sales of the GMC Hummer EV, GMC Sierra EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ. Affected employees will be put on temporary layoffs while retaining some of their pay and benefits.
The reason lies in the changed demand pattern: while expensive and powerful pickups and SUVs are losing popularity, the more affordable Chevrolet Equinox EV and Blazer EV are becoming the brand's best sellers. Ford and Tesla are experiencing similar difficulties, with interest in the F-150 Lightning and Cybertruck noticeably below forecasts.
According to AutoForecast Solutions, in the first half of 2025 in the United States sold about 35 thousand electric pickup trucks - 4% less than a year earlier. By comparison, sales of gasoline-powered full-size pickups totalled 1.6 million units in the same period.
