219,000 Ram and Dodge vehicles recalled due to faulty rearview cameras

Stellantis has announced another major recall, with more than 219,000 Ram and Dodge vehicles in the U.S. needing service due to a rearview camera malfunction.

Here's What We Know

The problem affects more than 141,000 Ram ProMaster vans and nearly 78,000 Dodge Journey crossovers. The camera can suddenly stop working and not display an image on the screen, which violates U.S. federal standards. The defect can only be corrected physically at dealer service stations. A simple "re-flashing" won't do the trick.

Just a few weeks ago, Stellantis recalled 121,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee due to another safety systems malfunction, and last year the company conducted a major campaign to repair rearview cameras on a number of models. A series of such recalls increasingly points to systemic problems rather than randomness.

The situation is exacerbated by financial difficulties: Stellantis reported a quarterly loss of $2.7bn, blaming some of it on tariff pressure, and even withdrew its full-year forecast. Massive service campaigns in such an environment not only hit budgets, but also create queues at services, annoy customers and reduce the residual value of cars on the aftermarket.
