On sale from 2026: Porsche reveals wireless charging for electric cars
Wireless charging has long been commonplace in smartphones, and now Porsche is ready to transfer this experience to electric cars. The German brand will be the first mass-market electric car manufacturer to bring to market an 11 kW system with a single floor plate, without the need for a separate "wall box" or control unit.
Here's What We Know
The first model with this technology will be the new Cayenne Electric, with a world premiere scheduled for late 2025. From 2026, the induction charging floor plate will go on sale at Porsche dealerships and the company's online shop. At the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich, the prototype will be shown with a spectacular fluorescent colour that changes with the start of the charging process.
In terms of power, the new system matches wired AC charging and the efficiency reaches 90 per cent. The dimensions of the cooker are 117×78×6 cm and it can be installed in a garage, under a shed or even in an outdoor car park. The cooker weighs around 50kg and is equipped with LTE and Wi-Fi modules for over-the-air software updates.
Special equipment is required for wireless charging to work on a car. The receiving coil is located in the underbody between the front wheels. To initiate charging, the electric Cayenne needs to be parked over a slab. The car then automatically clearance to bring the transmitting and receiving coils closer together. Integrated sensors recognise foreign objects or living beings: in such cases, the process is immediately interrupted.
Charging is integrated into the My Porsche app, where the process can be monitored and a timer can be set. The system also includes the familiar functions for pre-temperature preparation of the battery before travelling. For easy "aiming" over the charging plate, the driver is assisted by Surround View, which shows the exact position over the device.
According to Porsche research, around 75 per cent of charging for the brand's electric cars takes place at home, so the potential for the technology is huge. Porsche Wireless Charging will first appear in Europe, and later in other markets. The price of the device has not yet been named.
