Microsoft is warning users that support for Windows 10 is coming to an end, with only a month left to go. Starting 14 October 2025, the operating system will no longer receive security updates, bug fixes, or technical support.

The company urges users to upgrade to Windows 11 to keep their devices secure. For those who are not ready to upgrade, Microsoft offers a paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme that will allow them to receive critical patches for another three years, until October 2028. The cost of extended support is $30 (redeemable with Microsoft Rewards points) for individual users and $61 per device for corporate users. However, ESU does not include new features or design changes - Windows 10 is coming to the end of its life.

Windows 10, which was released in 2015, has become one of Microsoft's most popular operating systems. At the time of its release, company representatives said that Windows 10 would be the last Windows, the system would function "as a service", constantly being updated. But in 2021, the company released Windows 11 and has been focusing development on it ever since.

Windows 11 has higher system requirements than Windows 10, primarily in terms of processor (only 64-bit starting with eighth-generation Intel Core and AMD Zen+) and TPM 2.0 encryption module, so not all Windows 10 computers can be upgraded to Windows 11. Microsoft suggests that such users contact the nearest computer recycling centre, but most users will either continue to use Windows 10 (which will be somewhat dangerous in terms of future viruses and attacks) or switch to Linux.
