Production of the Nissan Ariya EV for the U.S. market will stop starting with the 2026 model year, Automotive News has learned. The crossover has only lasted three years.

Here's What We Know

The memo said the decision will allow the company to reallocate resources and optimise its line-up of all-electric models amid changing market conditions. Nissan later officially confirmed a pause in Ariya production for the US, explaining that the company's energies will be focused on launching the new Leaf for the 2026 model year.

Company representatives clarified in a comment for Motor1 that the decision only applies to the US market and is due to demand dynamics and changes in the market environment. There is no decision yet on the fate of the Ariya 2027 model year.

The reasons are called both the slowdown in demand for electric cars in the United States and new economic conditions. In particular, Japanese cars are now subject to a 15 per cent import tariff imposed by the Donald Trump administration. In addition, a $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles will expire on 30 September.

The Ariya debuted in 2022, and arrived in the U.S. a year later. The crossover's best sales result was in 2024 - about 20,000 units, well behind rivals Ford Mustang Mach-E and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

As for the new Leaf, it is currently the most affordable electric car on the US market. The price of the 2026 model year car is under $30,000 and nearly $10,000 cheaper than the 2025 model year Ariya.
