Mercedes-AMG: every new model must pass the "Batman test".
Mercedes-AMG is gradually abandoning large V8 petrol engines, but it is not going to lose the image of the "dark force" of the brand. Moreover, the division is sure that each new model should have a special character - not soft and friendly, but aggressive and daring.
Here's What We Know
AMG board member Michael Schiebe in an interview with Motor Trend called it a "Batman test". According to him, the brand's cars are meant to exude danger and power, not exemplary well-being. Schiebe believes Superman is the good son-in-law that everyone loves. And Batman is someone who is too dangerous for your daughter. Mercedes-AMG wants to be that "dangerous guy." So when working on new models, the people in charge ask themselves "is this car good enough for Batman?".
However, Mercedes-Benz chief designer Gordon Wagener warned his colleagues that it is not worth it to flirt too much with the Batman theme. He said some models may already seem too aggressive, especially for some female buyers.
The new approach comes at a time of great change for AMG. Just recently, the company showed 1 340-horsepower concept GT XX and is going to set 25 records for electric cars with it. On its basis, a production version with AMG.EA architecture and a three-motor setup is being prepared. The future "charged" electric SUV will receive the same powertrain.
Separately AMG singles out the Chinese market: while the segment of sports cars there is relatively small, but the growth prospects are huge. According to Schiebe, in the coming years in China will sharply increase demand for premium electric cars, and German manufacturers will be able to take a strong position.
