MG has unveiled the new MGU9, which will be the brand's first pick-up in the Australian market and will challenge the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux that dominate here.

Here's What We Know

The new product is based on the Chinese Maxus/LDV Terron 9, borrowing much of the technical stuff, but with a number of distinctive details for individuality.

Externally, MGU9 largely repeats the body of Terron 9. The large grille has a new shape, additional chrome elements and, of course, the MG logo in the centre.

Another interesting feature is the MG Smart Hatch system, which expands the cargo area thanks to a folding partition in the rear part of the cabin. However, this option is available only in the top-end Explore Pro configuration.

Inside the main accent is the gear selector in aviation style, unique for MG. The rest of the cabin follows the LDV Terron 9, including the standard digital dashboard with two 12.3-inch displays. The Explore Pro version gets heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, heated rear side seats, JBL audio system, panoramic glass roof and leather upholstery.

MG Australia emphasises that the MGU9 is designed and tested specifically for local conditions. The key difference from its Chinese counterpart is a multi-lever independent rear suspension instead of traditional for this class leaf springs. According to MG, this solution provides superior comfort and handling without compromising on payload.

Under the bonnet is a SAIC-made 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine producing 215 hp and 520 Nm of torque. The engine is combined exclusively with 8-speed automatic ZF and all-wheel drive system BorgWarner with reduction gear. Electronic differential locks on both axles are available as an option.

The declared towing capacity is 3500 kg, payload - from 770 to 870 kg, which corresponds to the level of competitors in the class of medium-size pickups.

The MGU9 measures 5,500mm long, 2,265mm wide and 1,874mm high with a wheelbase of 3,300mm. This makes it 130mm longer than the Ford Ranger with an additional 30mm in wheelbase.

Pre-orders for the MGU9 are already being taken in Australia, with deliveries to start in the second half of 2025. The price starts at AU$52,990 (US$34,900) for the base Explore version and goes up to AU$60,990 (US$40,200) for the top-of-the-line Explore Pro.

Interestingly, the MGU9 is about to get another relative in another part of the world. The upcoming VW Amarok Hybrid will also be based on the Maxus/LDV Terron 9 platform, but will get an electrified powertrain and will be produced at the General Pacheco plant in Argentina for South American markets.
