Toyota has unveiled the localised version of the 2026 model year Highlander SUV in China and it is significantly different from the US version.

Here's What We Know

The Highlander for the Chinese market is produced by the GAC Toyota joint venture. There's also a nearly identical Crown Kluger model from FAW Toyota, but that's another story.

At first glance, the Highlander 2026 looks almost the same as before, but the changes become noticeable inside the cabin. All trims get a 15.6-inch multimedia screen instead of the previous 10.25- and 12.3-inch units. It is combined with the standard 12.3-inch digital dashboard. The list of optional extras includes a projection display (HUD).

In comparison, the Limited and Platinum trims of the American Highlander come with two 12.3-inch screens and a 10-inch projection display. The other versions settle for a smaller 7-inch dashboard paired with an 8-inch multimedia screen.

To make room for the larger screen, Toyota has reconfigured the front fascia. The air deflectors are thinner and the physical climate control controls have given way to touchscreen controls. Other changes include 50-kilowatt wireless charging for gadgets and new colour options for the Nappa leather seats. Richer trims get a panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable and heated rear seats, and an 11-speaker JBL audio system. Buyers can still choose between a five-seat and seven-seat layout.

There are no changes under the bodywork. The 2.0-litre turbo engine develops 244bhp. It is combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system. A hybrid unit based on the 2.5-litre engine produces a combined 243bhp, offering a choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (E-Four) versions.

The slightly updated Toyota Highlander is already available to order in China with prices ranging from 249,800 to 325,800 yuan ($35,000 to $45,700). By comparison, the American Highlander starts at $45,270 and goes up to $54,675.

The fourth-generation Highlander has been available since 2019, though it didn't hit China until 2021. The GAC Toyota joint venture has confirmed that the next generation crossover will receive "extensive updates" along with the introduction of a range-extending powertrain - a popular solution among Chinese buyers.
