Elon Musk's companies SpaceX and xAI are massively buying Tesla Cybertruck electric pickups amid the model's market failure.

What is known

In 2023, Musk promised that the Cybertruck would sell like hotcakes — from 250,000 to 500,000 units a year. It's been two years, but Tesla isn't even close to those numbers. According to preliminary estimates, about 20,000 units of the electric pickup will be sold in 2025. The production line for this model is only 10% loaded.

As reported by Electrek, Musk made his other companies buy hundreds, if not thousands of Cybertrucks. Several new Cybertrucks were spotted near the xAI office last weekend. Additionally, SpaceX received hundreds of Cybertrucks at its space town Starbase last week. It is expected that the company will take in more hundreds, if not thousands of pickups, in the coming weeks.

Wes Morrill, lead engineer of Cybertruck, said that Cybertruck will replace the existing SpaceX support vehicles. However, he did not specify how many vehicles SpaceX plans to purchase.
