The portable ROG Xbox Ally X console received a score of 7 out of 10 from iFixit — repairable, but difficult
Technical specialists from the iFixit team conducted a repairability test on the new portable ROG Xbox Ally X console from Microsoft and Asus. The gadget received quite a high score, although some components still cannot be replaced.
What is known
During the teardown, iFixit noted that most components of the ROG Xbox Ally X can be easily disconnected with just a screwdriver and a guitar pick, and this process turned out to be much simpler than disassembling the Switch 2.
All the main components of the console are hidden behind the back panel, which is easy to open.
The engineers easily removed the battery, noted the simplicity of replacing the SSD and sticks, which may start sliding over time.
However, the device's display is positioned in such a way that it is impossible to remove it without damaging both it and the entire structure — iFixit did not even attempt to do so.
As a result, the ROG Xbox Ally X received a 7 out of 10 score from iFixit, and those who dare to repair the device themselves are warned that apart from the overall complexity of the process, Asus does not provide disassembly instructions, and currently, there are no components available on sale.
For those unaware
ROG Xbox Ally runs on Windows 11 Home with a reworked Xbox App that unifies the game libraries of Steam, Epic Games Store, GoG, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, and other platforms. The gadget runs games natively or in the cloud and also allows streaming games from a home Xbox console, positioning itself as a great acquisition for Game Pass subscribers.
Both models feature integration with the AI assistant, Copilot for Gaming, while the senior model ROG Xbox Ally X offers enhanced sticks and triggers with tactile feedback.
The base ROG Xbox Ally is equipped with an AMD Ryzen Z2A processor which provides an optimal balance between performance and battery life. The X model features a powerful AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chipset that offers higher frame rates and better graphics.
Both models were released without OLED screens — ASUS focused on VRR and reduced power consumption to avoid inflating the gadget prices.
