Rivian subsidiary launched an electric bike for $4000 with a built-in generator
It's no secret that Rivian, the American electric vehicle manufacturer, has been eyeing two-wheeled transport for a long time. Patents and other leaks have appeared over the years, but now we finally see the results of this interest — the new TM-B.
What is known
This is the flagship product of Also — a new brand that split off from Rivian. TM-B is a modular two-wheeled vehicle with a rather large waterproof block at the bottom of the frame.
Inside the block are a battery, a small generator, and a pedal system. Interestingly, the pedals are not physically connected to the rear wheel. By pedaling, the generator produces electricity, and the electronically controlled transmission delivers power to the rear wheel.
Also offers three riding profiles and a replaceable seating system. Buyers start by choosing a small or large seat. They can then add more options, including a cargo seat and a moto-style seat.
There's also a choice between the All-Terrain package with studded tires and two additional ride modes or the Street package with smoother tires. The AT package costs $200 more.
A five-inch touchscreen dashboard with a rotating frame displays travel data along with navigation. The bike has 120 mm travel suspension, but Also doesn't say whether it can be locked for climbs or flat roads. The brakes are particularly interesting — they use regenerative technology to return energy to the battery.
Also claims the bikes have a range of 60 to 100 miles (about 97–161 km) and torque of up to 180 Nm. The load capacity on more advanced models reaches 147 kg.
The base TM-B will cost "less than $4000," and the Launch Edition, available for order now, starts at $4500 without options.
