Toyota tests an AI-based driver assistance system
Toyota demonstrated a driver assistance system that uses artificial intelligence to prevent road accidents. The automaker has teamed up with telecommunications giant NTT to develop the necessary communication infrastructure.
What is known
Toyota conducted tests of the promising system at a research center in central Japan.
During the test, the car was heading onto a high-speed highway while the system analyzed the location and speed of other vehicles. Information was collected using sensors and cameras installed on the road. Then, artificial intelligence analyzed the data and sent it to the car's onboard device.
After that, the car automatically adjusted speed and steering to enter the high-speed highway.
Toyota is also testing technology to warn drivers of potential hazards, such as pedestrians suddenly running onto the road.
According to the head of Toyota's Software Development Center, Sarada Akihiro, the automaker hopes to reduce the number of accidents not only by predicting such dangers but also by encouraging people to change their behavior.
Toyota plans to start incorporating these technologies into its vehicles around 2028.
