Skoda reimagines the classic 1000 MBX coupe in a modern style

Skoda Auto designers created a modern interpretation of one of the legendary models of the Czech brand — a practical version of the 1000 MBX coupe.

What is known

The Skoda 1000 MBX is a unique coupe that was produced for a short period in the 1960s. Its elegant two-door body combined style and practicality. This essence inspired two Skoda Auto designers who developed a modern interpretation of the MBX coupe.

Antti Savio, responsible for exterior design, said that the new concept is generally sportier but still maintains a friendly look. He added that modern sports cars often appear overly aggressive, while cars from the 60s and 70s were more elegant and charming.

Bringing this spirit to the present day, the Skoda 1000 MBX in Modern Solid style becomes a kind of crossover, although at first glance it may not seem so. David Stingl developed an original interior layout with a 2+2 seating arrangement. The electric platform with a flat floor, developed for this concept, allows the front seats to fold into a wide bench, and the two separate rear seats feature folding backs, like in a cinema. The design also includes swing doors that provide easy access to the cabin.

With the rear seats folded down, there is enough space for luggage, a bicycle, or other sports equipment. The concept is even equipped with a pneumatic suspension that allows adjusting the ground clearance: lowered for a sporty style or raised for driving on uneven roads and carrying cargo.

David Stingl designed the dashboard as an oval module with a glass cover, on which images are projected. The oval motif is repeated throughout the interior, for example, on the steering wheel and characteristic headrests. This concept is directly inspired by the design of the original car's dashboard.

Like its historical predecessor, the modern MBX Vision 1000 does not have a central console. The chrome accents of the original model have been replaced by clean graphic details with background lighting, in line with Skoda's modern design philosophy "Modern Solid." The same philosophy extends to the exterior.
