Jeep recalls hybrids that turned into "bricks" due to an unsuccessful firmware update

Following a failed over-the-air Uconnect system software update that we reported on earlier, Jeep is recalling 24,238 Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrids.

What is known

The software error may lead to engine power loss. Many owners also complained about numerous related issues, including complete vehicle shutdowns. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the software update caused a loss of communication between the "Telematics Box Module" and the "Hybrid Control Processor" components. As a result, the latter resets, and the car can literally stop on the road at any moment.

While a final solution is still in development, the company has proposed "temporary corrective measures." Details are limited, but it was earlier reported that Jeep initially recommended not installing the update and then quickly released a new software version without this hazardous bug. Owners of affected SUVs who have already received the update and unwillingly became owners of "immobilized properties" will have to wait for repairs at service stations.
