Modern smartphones are getting more and more RAM, necessary for the rapidly increasing amounts of computing and data processing. Currently, increased memory capacity is mostly found in Pro and Ultra models, while basic ones are usually limited to 8 GB.

According to the latest leak, Apple plans to change this situation.

What's known

Sources from the South Korean publication The Bell, familiar with Apple's supply chain, reported that the basic iPhone 18 (2026) will receive 12 GB of RAM, while the standard iPhone 17 has 8 GB.

It is reported that for the production of the new smartphone, the American company ordered a large number of LPDDR5X DRAM chips from Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix, which are produced only in 12 and 16 GB configurations. Since 16 GB is too much for a basic smartphone model, it's logical to assume that the iPhone 18 will get exactly 12 GB of RAM.

This increase in volume is justified by Apple's desire to implement more AI functions, which will be carried out locally on the device without connecting to the cloud.
