Respected insider and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman reported that Apple is planning a major update to its devices and will switch to OLED displays for tablets and laptops.

What is known

Currently, Apple uses OLED panels only in small devices — in iPhone, iPad Pro, and Apple Watch, and microOLED in the expensive mixed reality headset Vision Pro.

The first in line to receive an OLED screen is the MacBook Pro — it is expected to happen in 2026–2027.

Following this, the American company will update the iPad mini. The corresponding model will be released in 2026 and could be $100 more expensive than the current version. The compact tablet will also have updated water and dust protection.

Apple has developed a new acoustic system using vibration technology. This change allows the company to remove speaker holes where water can enter. This is different from the waterproof construction of the iPhone, where openings are retained but gaskets and adhesive are used to prevent damage.

After the mini tablet and top laptop, the iPad Air will receive an OLED display, and the last one will be the MacBook Air — not earlier than 2028.

The basic iPad model is not part of the OLED display rollout.

Switching to OLED will allow Apple to unify display technologies across iPhone, iPad, and MacBook and also reduce device thickness.
