Until now, Mazda has produced electric cars built on platforms of internal combustion engine models or used developments from other brands, as well as platforms of its Chinese partner Changan. However, Mazda is now implementing a large-scale electrification program worth $10 billion, within which it is developing its own platform for electric cars.

What is known

Mazda has begun testing its first fully proprietary electric vehicle, which is planned to be released in 2027, reported Autocar.

Mazda's technical director Ryuichi Umeshita said that the company has formed a special "E-Mazda" team responsible for electrification projects, and personally tested the prototype of the future model. According to him, the car handles beautifully and provides "harmony between driver and machine".

Umeshita noted that the company is indeed entering the market later than competitors with its platform for electric cars, but the experience gained by engineers in creating the MX-30 allows them not to fear a serious lag. He did not disclose which models are currently under development. The question of whether Mazda's first self-developed electric car will be a mass or niche product also remains open and will depend on market and legal requirements.

Recently, Mazda announced plans to reduce costs and timelines for developing a new range of electric vehicles by utilizing advanced simulations, AI, and engaging partner suppliers. This will allow the company to perform three times the volume of work with the same resources.
