Google has begun integrating its flagship AI model Gemini into the Google Translate mobile app, unlocking new opportunities for more accurate and contextual translation.

What's Known

In the latest update of Google Translate, the developer added two modes: Fast and Advanced:

  • Fats — provides instant translation optimized for speed and resource saving;
  • Advanced — uses the Gemini model for more accurate and contextual translation, especially useful for complex expressions, idioms, and stylistic nuances.

The mode switch is located at the top of the screen under the service logo and is available on the translation results screen.

The update also includes some interface changes, particularly combining buttons for voice input, handwriting, and insertion at the bottom of the screen. The app now features a "Practice" function — personalized language practice where AI takes into account the user's level and learning goals. Previously, this function was presented as an alternative to the popular Duolingo app.

At launch, the Advanced mode works only for English-Spanish and English-French language pairs, but Google promises to expand support to other languages in the future.

The update is being rolled out gradually. iPhone owners noticed the first changes, but Android users are also receiving updates.
