Volvo Trucks announced the launch of the automatic engine shutdown/startup system (stop/start) for heavy trucks. According to the manufacturer, this is a world premiere for this segment of automotive technology.

What is known

The latest development by Volvo was created by the company's own efforts and is based on existing I-See and I-Roll technologies. The new engine stop/start function operates based on constant monitoring of road surface data. The engine temporarily shuts off when a downhill is detected on the route. While the engine is off, fuel consumption is zero, and therefore CO2 emissions are absent.

As explained by Jan Hjelmgren, head of product management at Volvo Trucks, the implementation of such solutions is part of the company's strategy to reduce the carbon footprint of transportation. He emphasized that Volvo will continue to improve internal combustion engines to reduce their negative impact on the environment.

The system activates at speeds over 60 km/h and, according to Volvo's calculations, allows additional savings of up to 1% fuel and reduces CO2 emissions, in addition to the existing fuel-saving technologies. The benefits lie not only in environmental friendliness but also in reduced operating costs for equipment owners.

The stop/start function will be available on Volvo FH and FH Aero models with 13-liter diesel engines. Orders for trucks with the new system can be placed already in November 2025.

Volvo's strategy for decarbonization also includes the development of engines running on renewable fuels, expanding the range of electric vehicles and fuel cell machines.
