Sora by OpenAI is now available for Android users in the US and six other countries
Sora, the AI-based video generator from OpenAI, is officially available for Android users in the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
What is known
After its September launch on iOS, where Sora gathered over a million downloads in less than a week and topped the App Store, the Android version is expected to expand the user audience.
The Android version retains all the functionality of the iOS application. Key features include "Cameos," a feature that allows creating videos using the user's digital avatar. Such clips can be posted in a feed similar to TikTok, enabling interaction with other users' content.
OpenAI positions Sora as a short AI-based video sharing platform that will compete with TikTok, Instagram, and Meta Platforms, which recently launched the Vibes video feed.
After launch, the generator faced criticism for using deepfake technologies. Some users created videos involving historical figures, including Martin Luther King Jr. In October, OpenAI suspended the ability to create such videos and strengthened its moderation system.
The policy regarding copyrighted characters has also been changed, now allowing their use only with prior consent from rights holders.
Future plans include new features: "cameos" with pets and objects, basic video editing tools, including joining several clips, and the ability to personalize the content feed.
