Sony announced an important update for the PlayStation Portal portable console.

Previously, this gadget could only be used for streaming games from the home PlayStation 5 console via the Remote Play option, but now the gadget can be used as a standalone platform.

What is known

On November 6 at 04:00 (CET), PlayStation Portal users with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription will be able to use the device to launch games from their library without connecting to PS5.

This feature will initially be available in a limited number of games: Astro Bot, Borderlands 4, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Fortnite, Ghost of Yōtei, Grand Theft Auto V, Resident Evil 4, among others. Sony will also provide access to games from the PlayStation Plus and classic games catalog.

The Japanese company emphasizes that cloud gaming on PS Portal opens up many new possibilities:

You can play together with a friend who uses your PS5 under a separate account or stream your favorite game while someone else watches a movie on the same console.

In addition to cloud gaming, other improvements and features will be added in the update:

  • 3D audio support;
  • Device password protection;
  • Network connection status screen;
  • Built-in store for in-game transactions during streaming;
  • More accessibility options;
  • Invitations to join the game;
  • Updated PS Portal interface.

The popularity of the PlayStation Portal exceeded all expectations of analysts and skeptics, and without the need to connect to PS5, the console becomes even more attractive to buyers.
